Anxiety And Impotence

Temporary impotence can be caused by anxiety. The relationship between anxiety and impotence is well documented and different forms of psychological stress related to the sexual act may lead to mild erectile dysfunction. In most cases, however, anxiety and impotence are not strongly correlated, and impotence is usually triggered by other problems, such as hormonal unbalances or medication side effects.

The physiology of an erection has been reviewed extensively. The penis consists of two columns of sponge like erectile tissue, the corpora cavernosa. It is enclosed by the tunica albuginea. The corpus spongiosum is located ventral to the corpora cavernosa and it conducts the ejaculate through the urethra.

Anxiety may often stop the erection from taking place and interrupt, through nerve signals, the smooth muscle relaxation that increases blood flow through the corpora cavernosa, leading to penile rigidity and erection.

There are many ways to reduce anxiety, including stress-reducing medications, but best of all is meditation and regular exercise. If these latter methods fail, you may find psychological counseling of benefit in solving anxiety and impotence.
